This is going to be the 'it' top for summer, and it secretly flatters your waist

First things first: Do you know what a bubble hem is? It's when the hem of a skirt or dress is cinched to create a puffed-out look that mimics a dollop of whipped cream. Last spring, bubble hems hit runways and malls, and they were pretty popular. This season, they're back and bigger than ever — and they're not just for skirts. I've seen bubble tops pop up all over the place, and I'm calling it! These are the "it" tops of the summer.

Like a bubble skirt, a bubble top is cinched at the bottom — in some cases, it simply makes it look like you tucked in your shirt. (I like these types of tops better than actually tucking in my shirt, because I can never seem to get my tucked-in tails to lie flat.) Plus, bubble tops are loose, comfortable and uber-flattering. Why? The puffed-out silhouette contrasts with your natural waist to make your midsection look slimmer.

I've come across countless bubble tops at stores including Loft, Anthropologie, Madewell, Nordstrom and Macy's. (Seriously, they're everywhere.) I've even picked up a few for myself. Want to try out this whimsical but grown-up trend? I've rounded up a few of my favorites below to help you get started.

Here's a standard cotton bubble top you can get in pink, white, brown or gray. The shirt has a high crew neckline with shirring around the top, so you can wear it to the office or casually on the weekends. I especially love that it comes in a jersey cotton that doesn't wrinkle as easily as other cotton fabrics.

"Super cute and very soft," one Loft reviewer shared. The shopper added that "it's a little short-waisted for taller ladies. I’m 5'9" and when I lift my arms, it does show my tummy. I purchased to wear under work blazers and it works wonderfully."

This top has a gorgeous braided neckline that buttons in the back, and the 100% cotton fabric billows out more dramatically than lighter knit fabrics like jersey cotton or polyester. You can dress it up with wide-leg trousers or pair it with jeans and flip-flops to keep things casual. If orange isn't your color, it also comes in white.

One Anthropologie shopper said they loved the orange so much that they also ordered it in white. Another said, "I love the neckline on this top," but added that it puffed out more than they'd prefer.

This blousy top has a romantic feel thanks to its puffed sleeves and shirring around the neckline. The airy fabric, available in black or light pink, has a slight sheen to it. Wear it with trousers to work or pair it with jeans for a casual dinner.

"I loved this one because I didn't have to tuck a blouse in but it still looks put together. It's very simple and elegant!" said one Ann Taylor shopper.

Make this printed cotton top your go-to on hot days. It's light, breathable and just right for adding a pop of color to your wardrobe. The cap sleeves give it a more elevated look, but because it's cotton, you can keep it casual and wear it with your fave white jean shorts.

"This top is so fashionable and affordable!" confirmed one Loft reviewer. "I really wowed people with it on a recent trip. They thought I looked trendy and young."

Not all bubble tops are tank tops. This one looks like a pretty, polished striped button-down, however, you don't have to worry about tucking it in — the bubble hem gives you that effect. The three-quarters sleeves are effortlessly rolled up with an attached strap for an "I just threw this on, but I look amazing" vibe.

If you prefer something with sleeves, this flowy chiffon top is a good pick. It has sheer sleeves that hit just above the elbow for a little extra coverage and ties at the sides for added flair. The model is rocking it with adorable printed shorts, but you could also dress this one up with wide-leg trousers and heels.

Madewell's bubble tee is a casual cotton-linen blend that drapes more than it puffs. It's a fun upgrade to your standard white T-shirt that you can don casually with jeans, linen pants or even leggings. It also comes in black, blue and butter yellow (the season's hottest hue).

Twelve out of 12 reviewers on Madewell's site give this baby a five-star rating. One wrote: "I was looking for a no-fuss white T-shirt that was also cute, and this totally fits the bill! Perfect top for both mid- and high-rise bottoms, simple enough for every day but easy to dress up too. Fabric is soft and doesn't require extra care (i.e. ironing!)."

Anthropologie first made this strapless bubble top a few years ago, and I swooped it up. Since then, I've worn it with white jeans for drinks out in the Hamptons, with blue jeans out to dinner with my family, with wide-leg trousers out to brunch and with shorts on especially warm days. While I wouldn't sport it at work, I've worn it almost everywhere else — and it's comfy! It comes in white and butter yellow, but the latter is sold out. (I joined the waitlist to get notified when the yellow version does come back in stock, because I think I need that one too.)

Just a note: This one has a sewn-in bubble hem that's not elastic. That means you get the bubble effect with a little extra flow — the hem won't be as tapered to your body.
