With 28 years of experience and a deep commitment to nurturing talent, Claire Lewis shares her insights on sector transformation, empowering women in leadership, and what it really takes to succeed in modern finance.
Claire Lewis (CL), Chief Operating Officer of Optimum Finance, has been immersed in the invoice finance industry since her sixth-form days, starting out through a work experience placement that unexpectedly launched a near three-decade career. With a deep understanding of the sector and a passion for mentorship, Claire has helped build and scale two startups in the industry, including Optimum itself.
In this exclusive interview with Leasing Life Editor Alejandro Gonzalez (AG), Claire reflects on her career journey, offers insights into the evolution of invoice finance, and shares advice for those looking to carve out a successful path in the sector.
CL: I’ve been in invoice finance since I was 17. I was fortunate to get a two-week work experience opportunity at a finance company while studying for my A-levels and I’ve stayed in the industry ever since.
My first task was stuffing over 2,000 envelopes with end-of-month customer statements. But I paid attention to what was happening around me and was fascinated by the industry’s pace and purpose. After that placement, they offered me a full-time role. With a bit of negotiation with my parents, I accepted and here I am 28 years later!
I’ve worked at several providers across the sector and had the privilege of being part of two businesses from their launch. Most recently, I helped launch Optimum Finance in 2017. We started with no clients and, like many startups, faced big challenges including Covid. But we’ve come through stronger than ever, with a fantastic team focused on delivering outstanding service.
CL: Honestly, no one day is the same, which is exactly why I love what I do.
As COO, my focus is ensuring the business runs smoothly, our clients are supported, and that we manage operational risk effectively. It can be demanding, but it's hugely rewarding. I’m deeply involved in both client servicing and oversight of our risk processes.
At Optimum, we actively encourage fresh perspectives and innovative thinking. Having been here since day one, I’m incredibly proud of the positive, agile culture we’ve created. It’s a key part of what makes us unique.
CL: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years, especially since becoming a parent is the importance of feedback. Celebrating wins and acknowledging effort consistently helps people feel valued, and I think we do that really well here.
