I'm a tech writer, and these are the Father's Day gadget gifts I know Dad will love

As a tech writer, a male of the species and the father to a couple above-average kids, I'm uniquely qualified to name the best gadget gifts for my kind. (Fathers, not tech writers. Though I could probably nail that, too.) Because what dad doesn't love screens, batteries, buttons and all the other trappings of electronic gear? I certainly do, and because I spend my professional life surrounded by this stuff, I've got some pretty great Father's Day gift picks lined up — at least one of which should please any guy with his own above-average kids. (That's you, fair reader.)

By the way, I'm not here to drain your bank account. There's nothing on this list above $100; several items cost $50 or less. I promise you: Just because they're affordable doesn't mean they're not awesome. Of course, if you want to splurge, you can't go wrong with an Ember self-heating mug ($150) or DJI Neo camera drone ($200), though the latter may not arrive in time for Father's Day. (It might be worth the wait, though; read my DJI Neo review to learn more.)

The best Father's Day gadget gifts for Dad

I think it's safe to say most dads love TV. So what better gift than a new-and-improved clicker? The Roku Voice Remote Pro works with nearly all Roku TVs and streaming devices, bringing several key upgrades to the couch: a rechargeable battery, backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls and a voice-powered "Where's the remote?" option.

I have this remote; I love this remote. And for just $30, it's one of the most affordable Father's Day gifts you can give.

(By the way, if Dad has an Amazon Fire TV, there's the Alexa Voice Remote Pro. It's $35 — though often on sale for less — and offers a similar set of features.)

If Dad likes to travel, this is something he'll appreciate having in his carry-on. The SafeFly Pro plugs into nearly any airplane's headphone jack, then transmits audio to Dad's favorite wireless earbuds or headphones. (It can connect with a second pair, too, in case he and Mom want to watch the same movie.)

Because this gizmo is also a Bluetooth receiver, it can plug into an old home or car stereo to play streamed audio from Dad's phone. And its battery is good for a whopping 25 hours on a charge. Not too shabby for under $35!

Compatible with Android phones and iPhones alike, Pebblebee's Bluetooth-powered item tracker can help Dad locate lost keys or just about anything else.

Why not an Apple AirTag instead? For starters, there's that whole Android compatibility thing, in case he doesn't use an iPhone. Secondly, the Clip not only beeps when in range, but also lights up.

Finally, this tracker is rechargeable; you don't have to worry about replacing its battery every year. So help Dad preserve his sanity by more easily recovering that missing thing.

A mini marvel of engineering, the JBL Go 4 delivers big sound from a small package. This little speaker can play for up to seven hours on a charge, plus it's completely waterproof and dustproof.

Does Dad have a favorite color? The Go 4 comes in nine different styles, everything from black to "Squad" (meaning camouflage).

I haven't tested this yet, but these reviews don't lie: The speaker earned a 4.8-star average rating from over 5,000 Amazon customers.

A must-have for Dad's toolbox, this surprisingly versatile air-compressor can fill car tires, bike tires, balls and more. It has a flashlight for nighttime needs and can even emergency-charge a phone if needed.

There are zillions of similar products sold on Amazon; I use this one myself and in fact reviewed it last year. You don't have to choose this exact model, but I do think this is something every dad would really appreciate having. I certainly do.

Is there a dad's office that doesn't have a couple framed photos of spouse, kids, maybe even dog? Time to level up: A digital photo frame puts thousands of photos on his desk, credenza or bookshelf. Video clips, too — let's see a regular frame do that.

This model, our top budget pick from our roundup of the best digital picture frames, includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen, plenty of storage (with room to add more) and an auto-rotating display that works in portrait or landscape orientation. Every single day, Dad can enjoy a non-stop slideshow of precious memories and loved ones. How is this not the perfect gift?

This is almost always on sale for under $50, either with a straight-up discount or a coupon you can clip.

Call it the gift of privacy: Dad can enjoy his favorite playlists, podcasts and more while blocking the noise of the outside world.

EarFun's stylish, comfortable earbuds offer incredibly good sound for the price, plus commendable ANC (active noise-canceling) and amazing battery life. They're also unusually novice-friendly thanks to clear printed instructions.

These are a solid buy at $80, but they go on sale all the time; I routinely see them discounted to $60. Read my complete EarFun Air Pro 4 review if you want to learn more.

Think Dad might be ready for a wristwatch upgrade? The Bip 6 is a remarkably capable smartwatch with a big, bright screen and tons of features (including heart-rate and sleep monitoring, which he might find useful).

You can read my complete Amazfit Bip 6 review to learn more, but just know this: The $80 price tag feels like a mistake, because this thing rivals watches costing 3-4 times more.
