The EU Commission has designated Blue Moon Metals' Nussir Project as a Strategic Critical Raw Material Project.
This development comes under the 2023 EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), which aims to diversify critical mineral supplies and reduce reliance on China.
The Nussir Project, located in northern Norway, is the first in the country to receive such a status, marking a milestone for Blue Moon Metals.
The project will now benefit from enhanced support by the EU Commission, including better access to funding and political backing, which are expected to accelerate its advancement.
Situated approximately 1.5km north of the Øyen industrial area and 1.5km south of Markoppnes industrial area, in Repparfjord, Kvalsund, Hammerfest Municipality, the Nussir deposit is strategically placed in the western part of Finnmark county.
The project's selection followed rigorous technical, environmental and social evaluations by independent experts to ensure compliance with the CRMA's requirements.
Blue Moon CEO Christian Kargl-Simard said: “Being defined as a Critical Raw Material Act Strategic Project is yet another milestone for Nussir and a strong endorsement of the work done to date. This inclusion will open up new opportunities for the company.
“We look forward to working together with the EU Commission and our stakeholders to maximise the local and regional benefits of the project, to support Europe’s self-relance for critical mineral supply and to significantly contribute to the green energy transition in the current geopolitically complex backdrop."
Of the 13 global projects added to the EU's strategic projects list, the Nussir Project stands out as the only primary copper initiative.
Blue Moon Metals is also progressing with other projects including the Blue Moon zinc-gold-silver-copper project in the US and the NSG copper-zinc-gold-silver project in Norway.
All three projects benefit from existing local infrastructure such as roads and power, bolstering their development prospects.
Kargl-Simard added: “We look forward to providing a clean copper supply to Europe for decades to come, especially with one of the cleanest copper concentrates in the world, powered solely from renewable energy sources.”
